Weather in Luxor & Weather in Aswan
Find out the latest Luxor weather and Aswan weather with our comprehensive climate and weather information below.
Weather in Luxor:
Perched on the edge of the desert, the weather in Luxor swings from scorchingly hot summers to cool winters. Even in Egypt, where severe weather is the usual norm, temperatures in Luxor are considered extreme. Luxor receives very little rain throughout the year, and is arid and dusty.
From March to May, virtually every year, Luxor experiences hot, gusty winds known as the Khamsin. When these winds blow, the temperature in Luxor can fluctuate dramatically - with the heat soaring in a matter of hours. The Khamsin brings with it hot sands from the deserts in the west and that accounts for the heat. These sandstorm-like conditions cause spring weather to be unpredictable in Luxor.
Visitors need not expect rain in Luxor - it is the sun that they will need protection against. They would be well advised to bring plenty of sun protection in the form of sunscreen and hats. Winter stretches from November to February and the air is mild. Luxor is close to the desert, so night temperatures can fall to around 10 degrees Centigrade or 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Luxor is a parched land. In a whole year, total rainfall can measure as little as 0.1 inches. January may experience a rare thunderstorm which may bring a sprinkling of rain. But it is more likely to produce swirling dust and sand. Winter with its favourable weather, sees most tourist arrivals. Cruising down the Nile is best in spring and autumn, when its possible to picnic on its banks.
Weather in Aswan:
The weather in Aswan affects the influx of tourists at different times of the year. Aswan remains hot and dry most of the year. The temperatures in Aswan fluctuate from a moderate 23 °C to 30 °C during winter and rise up to a sweltering 38 °C to 54 °C in summer. The best time to visit Aswan is late autumn and spring since it is less crowded then than in winter, which is the most popular tourist season. Summer in Aswan is exhausting and tourists dwindle.
Like most of Egypt, Aswan records extreme temperatures. Summers in Aswan are extremely hot with temperatures staying between 31.6 °C and 33 °C. Summer is followed quickly by winter and there is hardly any room for spring or autumn. While January is the coolest month with pleasant weather and temperatures averaging at 60 °F or 15.5 °C, July temperatures reach an oppressive 93 °F or almost 34 °C. The wettest month is April with 0.4 inches of rain and temperatures averaging 82 °F or 27.7 °C.
Khamsin or dry winds blow inland from the western desert during the months of March and April. Winters in Aswan are never too cold and the perfect time to be up and about. In fact, this entire region doesn't have extreme day and night temperature fluctuations like many deserts typically have.
